Rockland made its initial investment in Tradewinds in October 2005.
Description
Tradewinds is a veneer mill and cogeneration development project located on the Big Island of Hawaii. In late 2009, Tradewinds merged with the owner of the 13,000 acre Hamakua plantation and currently controls roughly 19,000 acres of timber on the island. The State of Hawaii Department of Health has issued the air permit required for construction of the cogeneration facility and Tradewinds has signed a power sales agreement with Hawaiian Electric Light Company. The company owns a thirty-one acre industrial site on the Hamakua coast where the mill and cogeneration facility will be located. Once completed, the cogeneration project will use wood as fuel to provide steam and power to the veneer mill and will also sell excess power to the local utility.
